Just because someone's gonna ask eventually..

What app would you recommend as an alternative to FruityLoops?

you are FUCKED. seriously.... i was waaay into fruityloops awhile back and knew it way too well. i guess it kind of depends on what you are doing. if the thing you loved the most about fl is that you can edit like 6 different paramaters of a note really easy and cut notes with other notes then cheesetracker is probably the best bet right now. beast/bse was getting cool until they sold out to the piano roll. as for that wonderful drum machine interface you are pretty much out of luck. there's hydrogen and some other lesser developed drum machines but they are just that, drum programs. some day hopefully. i wish there was someway to convince someone to try and pull this off, but everyone seems to either be a tracker die hard or a traditionalist trying to recreate cubase or pro tools. if anyone knows of any projects heading in the right direction please let me know.

FL is bollocks anyway...very over rated! I found it very limiting but as a idm/glitch artist that would be why I'm achally looking into PD and Jmax at the moment...FL inhibits personal sound design I think to! preset fiddling isnt quite as creative!

if I were you I'd get your self a copy of rosegarden and some plug in's and start playing ;o)

Got Rosegarden, but it's that same old staves-and-notes paradigm that just doesn't click for me. I started out using fasttracker, so FL just had a better feel...

With homemade samples and granulab-edited sequences, FL can produce some good output, just takes a lot of effort to make it sound real.

If you're still interested, Hydrogen is coming close to FruityLoops equivalent. But don't tell it it's author -- he hates FL :)
